TestimonialsWe would like to receive any comments you have about our book, Joseph Cornell Shadowplay...Eterniday, the Magical Worlds of Joseph Cornell DVD-ROM or the Magical Films of Joseph Cornell DVD video. You can contact us at: feedback@voyager-foundation.org."Jonathan Binstock, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., attended a reception and presentation of the DVD ROM on 15 October 2003. The next day, he posted the following as a participant in an online symposium titled, Museum Education and Pedagogy,. “It [the DVD ROM] features volumes and volumes of material (maybe six very thick books worth), including factual information; Cornell’s films; video commentaries by academics, curators, dealers, collectors, friends of the artist, etc.; source material from art history and the Cornell Study Center at the Smithsonian American Art Museum; and, get this, extensive video imagery that convincingly conveys what it is like to look closely at and handle the actual boxes. I’ve never picked up a Cornell box and jiggled the stuff inside or opened the drawers, etc. Even curators are discouraged from doing this. But I now feel as if I have. I have never seen anything like this DVD in the art world, and I believe it is the first of its kind to appear…My experience last night leads me to believe that I’ve gotten the first whiff of what art education, publications and, in particular, a successful digital museum educational experience might look like in the future. In fact, in some ways I think this DVD has surpassed the museum experience. The DVD offers an intimate experience of many art objects, even though the art in question is not actually present.”" -- Jonathan Binstock, Curator of Contemporary Art "I have just recently purchased Joseph Cornell Shadowplay Eterniday and have been thoroughly captivated by it. The entire production is superb. -- Frank Vogtner "“This book, with the accompanying DVD, illuminates Joseph Cornell’s work with a light twice as bright as that cast by the already amazing 1980 MOMA catalog; along with the extremely thoughtful and instructive essays, crystal clear printing, and the newly photographed selection of boxes, it’s the accompanying disc which really astounds, allowing one to see all his films, look through family photographs, examine and “zoom in” on all of his major works (including inside previously closed drawers and lids), see more clearly the pieces and stems of his paper dossiers and boxes of his working materials, and even see copies of a few of the books and records from his personal library – all of which leads to a sharper sense than ever of the texture, physicality, and feeling of his work. It would be difficult to imagine a more thoroughly considered book about Cornell than this – or about any artist, for that matter. I suspect this book will set a new standard for the idea of what qualifies as an “artist monograph,” and the authors and designers should be congratulated for their amazing, careful, and truly generous achievement.”" -- Amazon.com – A reader from Chicago, IL USA |
